About botox & fillers

Botox and fillers can reduce wrinkles and subtly adjust facial contours. Botox relaxes specific muscles and is used, among other things, to treat frown lines and forehead wrinkles. Fillers add volume and can be used, for example, on the lips, cheekbones, or the nasolabial folds. You should discuss which treatment is right for you with your treating physician.
  • A treatment with Botox is possible from €75 and with fillers from €350. The final cost depends on the treatment area and the amount of Botox or filler required. During the consultation, the doctor discusses your wishes and options, so that you know in advance exactly what the treatment will cost.
  • The difference between botox and fillers lies in how they work. Botox temporarily reduces the activity of certain muscles and is mainly used for wrinkles caused by facial expressions. Fillers are used to add volume, improve contours or soften deeper lines. During the consultation, we look at which treatment, or combination of treatments, best suits your wishes.
  • The result of Botox remains visible for a few months on average and then gradually fades as muscle activity returns. With fillers, how long the effect lasts depends on factors such as the area treated, the product used and your body. The doctor will discuss beforehand what result and duration of effect you can expect from your treatment.
  • At Boerhaave, treatment with Botox and fillers is performed by experienced plastic surgeons with an eye for safety, quality and a natural result. You can count on personal guidance and extensive aftercare, so that you know where you stand throughout the entire treatment process.

Here's how the treatment works

Here you will find all the important information about this treatment, from the consultation and the treatment itself to follow-up care, the results, and potential risks.

  • Botox

Some wrinkles are caused by repeated muscle movements, such as frown lines, forehead wrinkles, and crow’s feet. These can be easily treated with Botox. The muscle groups that cause the wrinkles are weakened, which reduces the wrinkles themselves. A lesser-known application is a brow lift and corner-of-the-mouth lift using Botox. It can also be used to treat smile lines on the nose and to reduce the visibility of gums when smiling.

Keep in mind that Botox on the face initially lasts three to four months. With repeated use, the effect can last longer—namely, six to seven months.

Do you suffer from excessive sweating of the armpits and hands? Botox can be used to treat this condition. The effects last six to twelve months.

    Fillers

Wrinkles can also be caused by the skin becoming thinner and less firm. Fillers can be used to address this. They fill in the creases and wrinkles, accentuate the contours, and rejuvenate the face.

    Fillers can be used for:

    • Filling the nasolabial fold
    • Filling in the smoker’s lines above the upper lip
    • Filling in smile lines on the cheeks
    • Correcting drooping corners of the mouth
    • Increasing lip volume
    • Enhancing lip contour
    • Enhancing the cheekbones

    No permanent fillers

There are two types of fillers: temporary and permanent. At Boerhaave, we work exclusively with temporary fillers. This means the filler and its effects disappear after a few months. Permanent fillers, however, are long-lasting, and their effects are irreversible. Although this may sound promising, we believe that the long-term results and risks are unpredictable. Your body undergoes various changes over the years. As a result, a filled-in wrinkle may produce a beautiful result in the short term, but can have a completely different effect after a few years.

There are various types of fillers with different properties. We work exclusively with the highest-quality fillers from the Juvederm brand. Your doctor will advise you on which filler best suits your needs.

    Botox + Fillers

In most cases, a combination of Botox and fillers is ideal. The muscles are first weakened with Botox, and then the skin around the wrinkle is firmed with a filler. This combination allows for optimal results.

  • Both treatments can be performed with or without local anesthesia. In most cases, however, the treatment is performed without anesthesia. The doctor can determine in advance whether anesthesia is necessary in your case. In some cases, it is better for the final result not to use anesthesia.

If the injectable is for your lips, it is possible to numb this area with an injection or a numbing ointment. This way, you won’t feel the injectable or the sensitive skin of your lips.

For the treatment itself, you’ll lie down or sit in the treatment chair. Using a very thin needle, several injections will be administered into the area to be treated. This is virtually painless and takes no more than half an hour in total.

If you’ve chosen Botox, it will be injected directly into the relevant muscle. With fillers, the liquid is injected just under the skin, after which the treated area is massaged so that the injected liquid can be evenly distributed.

In some cases, the treated area may be slightly red, swollen, or have a small bruise. These symptoms generally disappear quickly. You may apply light makeup as early as one hour after the treatment.

  • Botox

It is important that you avoid touching the treated area for at least three hours after the treatment. This includes rubbing.

You’ll start to see the effects of the Botox treatment after one to two weeks. These effects last for about three to four months. The more often you have the same area treated, the longer the effects will last.

    Fillers

The effects of fillers last for a longer period—specifically, six to twelve months. This does depend on the product and the treated area. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled in consultation with the doctor.
