About an eyebrow lift

Aging can cause drooping eyebrows and deep frown lines or forehead wrinkles, which can make you look tired. A forehead lift lifts the forehead and eyebrows, giving you a younger, more open, and more rested appearance.

  • An eyebrow lift is available from €1,250. During a free, no-obligation consultation, our plastic surgeon discusses and assesses which procedure suits you best, including a personal cost indication.
  • The difference lies in the size of the incision and the area that is lifted. During the consultation, the plastic surgeon determines which option suits you best.
  • On average 4 to 7 days. In the first days, the eyebrows and eyes may be bruised and swollen; this usually subsides within 1 to 2 weeks.
  • At Boerhaave, an eyebrow lift is performed by experienced plastic surgeons with an eye for safety, quality and a natural result. You can count on high-quality implants, personal guidance and comprehensive aftercare, so that you know where you stand throughout the entire treatment process.

Here's how the treatment works

Here you will find all the important information about this treatment, from the consultation and the treatment itself to follow-up care, the results, and potential risks.

  • Unlike an endoscopic forehead lift, this procedure uses an “open” technique, with several options. For example, an incision can be made through the upper eyelid, behind the hairline at the temples, or above the eyebrows. The difference between a standard brow lift and an extended brow lift lies in the size of the incision and the area to be lifted. During your consultation, we will discuss which option is most suitable for you.

Because brow lifts are now performed endoscopically, they are typically performed on older patients and are also more common among men when the eyebrows have begun to droop noticeably over the eyes. The central area of the forehead is not treated during this procedure.

  • Plastic Surgeon
During your initial consultation—which always takes place with the plastic surgeon who will be treating you—you can explain what bothers you most about your eyebrows and what you’d like to change. Based on photos and your wishes, the plastic surgeon will suggest the surgical technique best suited for you and discuss it with you. He may suggest combining the eyebrow lift with an eyelid correction. This combination is often performed.

At the end of the consultation, your discussion will be summarized in a treatment plan, and the total costs will be discussed with you immediately. This allows you to make an informed decision. After all, the purpose of the consultation is to provide you with as clear and complete information as possible.

    Consultant
Following your consultation, you will also have a meeting with your consultant. You will then be informed about the general procedures that need to be arranged regarding the procedure.

  • On the day of your eyebrow lift, you are expected to arrive at the clinic half an hour early. The procedure itself will be performed under local anesthesia and will take about one hour.

Before the surgery begins, the procedure will be discussed with you once more, and the plastic surgeon will mark your face according to the surgical plan. Depending on the surgical technique used, a small strip of skin will be removed from the hairline, above your temple, or just above the outer edge of your eyebrow. The skin will be closed with a dissolvable suture, and the incision will be covered with a bandage and, if necessary, a headband.

  • With a standard eyebrow lift, you can usually go home after half an hour. If your procedure is combined with an upper or lower eyelid correction, you’ll usually stay at the clinic for another three to four hours. This is because this procedure is performed under general anesthesia rather than local anesthesia. You may not go home until the nurse and anesthesiologist deem it safe to do so.

    Post-operative discomfort
Your face may feel slightly burning after the treatment. In the first few days afterward, you’ll experience some additional swelling, which will subside after the third day. In general, patients experience virtually no pain from this procedure.

    Recovery
It takes about four to seven days to recover from a brow lift. After the procedure, the skin around your temples may feel a bit tight. You may also notice slight swelling and bruising. This is a natural reaction of the body and is generally nothing to worry about. If you have a combined upper and lower eyelid correction, you may also experience blurred vision. This can last a few weeks and will subside over time.

    Cooling Goggles
We’ll provide you with special cooling glasses to take home so you can properly cool the treated area. Be sure to follow the instructions for use provided by the nurse.

    Scar cream
During your first follow-up visit, you’ll be given a scar care cream to take home. Once the wound has closed and the scabs have fallen off, you may begin applying the scar cream. Applying this to the closed wound twice a day will increase the likelihood of a good healing outcome.

  • The results are visible fairly quickly. After a few weeks, the incisions along your hairline will have healed, and you can begin to enjoy your youthful appearance. However, you’ll see the final results after six to twelve months.

Although the aging process continues and gravity will eventually take its toll again, the results of your eyebrow lift will last. It is important, however, to continue protecting your skin from the sun and to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This will help you preserve the results.

  • Any surgical procedure can involve risks and complications. Because plastic surgery generally involves healthy individuals, the risks and likelihood of complications are low. Through thorough information, a comprehensive medical history, and our professional approach, we reduce these risks to an absolute minimum. In addition, you can help minimize certain risks by carefully following the instructions you have been given.

    Some possible complications may include:

    • Hematoma (a collection of blood under the skin that requires removal)
    • Adverse reaction to the anesthetic
    • Postoperative bleeding
    • Infection
    • Changes in sensation
    • Permanent scarring
    • Damage to underlying structures
    • Unsatisfactory aesthetic result.

    Smoking
Patients who smoke or use tobacco or nicotine products at the time of surgery are at greater risk for complications, such as skin necrosis and impaired wound healing. It can also have a negative effect on anesthesia, potentially resulting in an increased risk of bleeding. People exposed to secondhand smoke may also be at increased risk for similar complications. People not exposed to secondhand smoke have a significantly lower risk of such complications.

It is important to stop smoking at least four weeks before surgery and to continue abstaining throughout the entire recovery process.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • An eyelid correction treats excess skin and fat at the level of the eyelid itself. An eyebrow lift addresses the position of the eyebrow and the forehead. Sometimes it seems as if there is too much eyelid skin, while the actual cause is a drooping eyebrow. The two procedures are also often combined.

  • With the endoscopic technique, the scars are hidden in the hairline and barely visible. With a classic, open technique, the scar may be slightly longer and more visible, depending on the hairstyle.

  • Yes, this procedure is often combined with an eyelid correction, botox or a facelift for a harmonious overall result.

  • The result is visible fairly quickly. After a few weeks, the incisions in your hairline will have healed and you can start enjoying your youthful appearance. However, you will see the final result after six to twelve months.

Although ageing continues and gravity will take its toll again, the result of your eyebrow lift will last. It is important, though, to keep protecting your skin from the sun and to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This will help you preserve the result.
