Meet ENT specialist Dr. F. van Zijl

Dr. Floris van Zijl completed his medical degree and residency in otolaryngology at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam. Early in his training, he developed a passion for facial surgery, which, after completing his ENT residency, led to a recognized advanced specialty training program in facial surgery. He completed this training at Radboud UMC in Nijmegen, made possible in part by a scholarship he received from the European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery.

He is internationally recognized and certified as a facial plastic surgeon, in part thanks to passing the notoriously difficult exam administered by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

In 2020, he joined the staff of the ENT department at Erasmus MC, with specific expertise in the field of complex nasal surgeries. These are rhinoplasties aimed at improving breathing and appearance following, for example, a severe accident, a congenital deformity, or revision surgery after a failed rhinoplasty performed elsewhere.

As an academic nasal surgeon, Dr. van Zijl is also active in the scientific field of nasal surgery and earned his Ph.D. in this subject. As a doctoral candidate, he participated in various courses and conferences in Barcelona, Amsterdam, Stuttgart, London, and Nice, and visited the University of St. Andrews in Scotland to conduct research with the group led by Prof. Dr. D.I. Perrett. Among other things, he investigated how the outcomes of rhinoplasty can be measured and identified specific characteristics that make a nose attractive.

In addition to his clinical and scientific work, Dr. van Zijl has also held various administrative positions, for example within the Dutch Society for Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery and the European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery.
