Lately, my female patients have increasingly been asking me about the options for breast augmentation with their own fat. In most cases, these are women who have already researched the subject thoroughly before visiting my consulting room. They know that developments in breast implants are advancing. The main emphasis here is on the safety of the materials used. However, the negative reports about inferior breast implants still cause hesitation in the decision to give the breasts a more attractive and fuller appearance in this way.
It goes without saying that my colleagues and I at Boerhaave Clinic work exclusively with breast implants of proven, responsible quality. Many women opt for these and achieve a beautiful and safe result that lasts for many years. It is no coincidence that in 2019 Elsevier named us the best clinic in the field of breast augmentations. But as a leading clinic, we are happy to respond to the questions we receive from our discerning patients, and so we also want to offer an alternative. For a great many women who want to make their breasts more beautiful, lipofilling, breast augmentation with their own fat, is an alternative.
Lipofilling is not yet as well known as placing implants. Yet it has long ceased to be a new technique and is even internationally recognised as state of the art. In the United States, the association for aesthetic plastic surgery there already registered 18,135 breast lipofillings in 2015, and this number grows every year. It is a proven technique that is used, among other things, to fill defects or wrinkles. This technique can therefore also give a breast augmentation a particularly beautiful result.
What makes the use of lipofilling in the breasts such a good technique is that no implant is needed. The body’s own material is used. Excess fat, for example from the stomach, can be harvested and then injected into the breasts. In this way, enlargement of the breasts can be achieved. It also offers a solution if the two breasts are not the same size or change shape with age. In addition, you can imagine that inserting the body’s own fat means that only minuscule scars are created.
As with all plastic surgery, safety and care should come first with lipofilling too. An experienced plastic surgeon can accurately assess whether enough excess body fat can be harvested. They also know that part of this fat will dissolve soon after it is inserted into the breasts, and therefore how much they need to insert to achieve the lasting result the woman wants. In our practice we now have extensive experience with this technique. If you would like to know more about the options this offers for you too, you are more than welcome in my consulting room.
