About an arm lift
| Due to aging or weight loss, the skin on the upper arms can stretch and sag. During an arm lift, excess skin is removed through an incision on the inner side of the arm, resulting in slimmer, firmer upper arms. |
An armlift is available from €3,000. During a free, no-obligation consultation, our plastic surgeon discusses and assesses which procedure suits you best, including a personal cost estimate. - The classic armlift is suitable for moderate to excessive skin surplus. For excessive to severe skin surplus (for example after significant weight loss), the extended armlift offers a better result, with an additional scar in the armpit fold.
- On average 2 to 3 weeks (4 to 6 weeks for an extended armlift). For the first six weeks you must not do intensive exercise, heavy lifting or heavy work.
- At Boerhaave, an armlift is performed by experienced plastic surgeons with attention to safety, quality and a natural result. You can count on personal guidance and comprehensive aftercare, so that you know where you stand throughout the entire treatment process.
Here's how the treatment works
Here you will find all the important information about this treatment, from the consultation and the treatment itself to follow-up care, the results, and potential risks.
As we age or lose weight, the skin on the upper arms can become too loose and start to sag. There are two types of procedures that can address this issue: a classic arm lift or an extended arm lift.
Classic Arm Lift
In both procedures, excess skin is removed from the upper arm. However, if you have moderate to excessive excess skin, the classic arm lift is the right choice for you. By tightening the skin, your upper arms will take on a more attractive appearance.Extended Arm Lift
Do you have excessive to severe excess skin? In that case, the classic procedure will not provide sufficient aesthetic improvement. The extended arm lift will offer you better results. In both cases, the procedure results in a noticeable improvement in the aesthetic appearance of your upper arms. You’ll feel more confident in sleeveless clothing and be able to go out more comfortably dressed as the weather warms up. It’s important to note, however, that there may be visible scars on your upper arms.
During your consultation, our specialists always place great emphasis on the consequences of the procedure. This includes the fact that, even with the utmost care, we can never fully guarantee that both upper arms will be completely symmetrical after the procedure.
Plastic Surgeon
Your consultation will always take place with the plastic surgeon who will be treating you.
During this consultation, you can explain what bothers you most about the sagging of your arms and what you would like to change. The plastic surgeon will review your medical history and examine your upper arms. Based on this, the surgical technique most suitable for you will be proposed and discussed with you.For example, if you have lost a significant amount of weight following gastric bypass surgery or gastric banding, you may be advised to opt for an extensive arm lift. The difference is that the ends of the scar are positioned in such a way that the transition to the forearm and armpit area is as inconspicuous as possible. Due to the general skin laxity following significant weight loss, the skin may never become completely taut and smooth; however, the plastic surgeon will show you in the mirror what you can expect from this procedure. This will allow you to make a well-informed decision.
Combination Treatment
In some cases, a complementary procedure such as liposuction may be recommended. This will also be explained to you, along with what you can expect in terms of the final result.Consultant
Following your consultation, you will have a meeting with your consultant. The purpose of this meeting is to inform you about the general procedures that need to be arranged. Would you like to read more about your first consultation? Find more information here.BMI
This procedure is always performed under general anesthesia. It is therefore important that it proceeds safely. For this reason, you must be at a healthy weight. Would you like to know if you are at a healthy weight?Calculate your BMI here.
Before the surgery, your plastic surgeon will review the surgical procedure with you once more, before marking your arms according to the surgical plan.
To perform the procedure, an incision will be made along your arm. The location and length of the incision depend on the amount of skin that needs to be removed. It often runs from your armpit to your elbow. This longer incision allows for optimal removal of your excess skin.
In the case of an extensive arm lift, an additional horizontal scar in the armpit crease may be necessary.
A modern surgical technique is used for this procedure, in which the incision is made on the inner side of the upper arm, usually from the armpit to the elbow. Once the excess skin and associated fat have been removed, the skin is closed.
Depending on the amount of skin that can be removed, the entire procedure takes between two and three and a half hours.
After the surgery, we will provide you with elastic sleeves that you must wear for four weeks. If you have had an extensive arm lift, you must wear them continuously for four weeks and continue to wear them during more vigorous arm movements afterward. After the first week, it’s important to let the scar air-dry and heal while you’re sitting or lying down quietly. Starting in the second week, you may remove the sleeves for a few hours each day. Of course, you must be careful with your movements and should avoid intense exercise, heavy lifting, and strenuous work for the first six weeks.
Recovery
In general, it takes two weeks to recover from the surgery. You may also notice swelling and bruising. The swelling will increase during the first few days and will begin to subside after a week. In addition, significant fluid retention may occur, mainly in the hands. This is a natural reaction of the body and is generally not a cause for concern. It will gradually subside over the course of a few weeks.Scar Cream
During your first follow-up visit, you’ll be given a nourishing scar cream to take home. Once the wound has closed and the scabs have fallen off, you may begin applying this cream. Applying it twice a day to the closed wound will increase the likelihood of a smooth, even healing. The procedure produces excellent results that will be visible fairly soon after surgery. However, the final results can best be assessed three months after surgery, once all swelling has subsided. Your arms will look slimmer and firmer.
The more skin and fatty tissue that is removed, the longer it will take for the final result to become apparent. In the case of an extensive arm lift, the appearance of your upper arm may continue to change for up to six months.
The best results are achieved if you have a healthy and stable weight and are able to maintain it. It is important to note that your skin will lose elasticity as you age, but the results will remain visible.
Scars
This procedure will leave a fairly long scar in a visible area. You should be aware that it will be visible when wearing short sleeves. Initially, these scars will be red and swollen, but this will subside on its own after a few weeks. For the first few months after treatment, you must not expose the scars to the sun. You also shouldn’t use a tanning bed on them. However, you may cover them or apply sunscreen with a high SPF. It’s helpful to know that a scar takes one to one and a half years to fully heal.
The likelihood of risks and complications associated with an arm lift is rare. However, you can help further reduce certain risks by carefully following the instructions you received prior to the surgery.
Some possible complications include:
- Hematoma (a collection of blood under the skin that requires drainage)
- Adverse reaction to the anesthesia
- Postoperative bleeding
- Infection
- Changes in sensation
- Permanent scarring
- Damage to underlying structures
- Unsatisfactory aesthetic result.
Smoking
It is important to know that if you smoke or use tobacco or nicotine products at the time of surgery, you are at a higher risk of complications. These include skin necrosis and impaired wound healing. It can also have a negative effect on anesthesia, potentially resulting in an increased risk of bleeding. It is therefore important to stop smoking at least four weeks before surgery and to continue abstaining throughout the entire recovery process. People exposed to secondhand smoke may also be at an increased risk of similar complications. People who are not exposed to tobacco smoke or nicotine-containing products have a significantly lower risk of such complications.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Yes, in some cases an additional treatment is recommended, such as liposuction or Renuvion, to further improve the final result.
- Yes, a relatively long scar forms on the inner side of the upper arm, which may be visible when wearing short sleeves. The scar is red and swollen at first, but this fades after a few weeks. A scar needs about one to one and a half years to settle completely.
- An incision is made on the inside of the upper arm, usually from the armpit to the elbow. Through this incision, the excess skin and fatty tissue is removed, after which the skin is closed. Depending on the amount of skin to be removed, the procedure takes between 90 and 180 minutes (extended version up to 210 minutes).
- Yes, compression garments are an important part of your aftercare. The right compression helps to reduce swelling after the operation. For this, Boerhaave uses VOE compression garments, specially designed for comfort during recovery. As the swelling goes down, it may be necessary to order a size smaller after some time.
